Broughty Ferry Gala Committee Announces the 2014 Programme of Events

03Jun

Broughty Ferry’s Gala Day on Sunday 29 June signals the start of the seaside town’s long established and ever popular Gala Week, which runs until Sunday 6 July.

The day sees people from far and wide descend on Castle Green to enjoy some good old fashioned family fun including the children’s fancy dress competition, pipe band parade, live music, Radio Tay Roadshow, traditional fete games, fresh food from local suppliers, fire engine, face painting, charity stalls, fairground attractions and, for the grown ups, the beer tent.

Entry to the fete is free but a bucket collection and fundraising activities raise money which is donated to local charities such as The Lifeboat, Age Concern, St. Andrews Ambulance, YMCA and the Scouts. Any surplus will go towards the purchase of additional Xmas street light displays.

Gerry Stewart, Chair of The Broughty Ferry Community Gala Committee said:

"A fantastic amount of thought and work has gone into organising this years events, so we are confident that this year’s gala week will be one of the best ever.

We want to see plenty people coming to the Ferry, Grannies, Grandads, Mums, Dads, Uncles, Aunties, kids of all ages, and of course anyone else!

Of course, The Gala Committee works extremely hard to make Gala Week happen but we couldn’t do it without the generous support of Dundee City Council and the event sponsors."

The week continues with the now legendary window spotting competition where members of
The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association display an article in their windows which they do not sell. This year there are 71 traders involved. There are several events every day of the week including the Sand Sculpture Competition, Pavement Drawing Competition, Antiques Roadshow, Quiz Nights, Family Fun Night, Fishing Competition, Bonnie Baby Competition and many more. All the participating shops and businesses are members of The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association, and have displayed in their windows an article which they do not sell. The object of the competition is for young people (under 14) to look at the windows and discover what the ‘odd’ article is. For instance in the Baker’s shop you might find a teapot or in the newsagent, a paint brush.
