Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association Unveils the Town’s New Website

02Feb

Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association have been working with local web development company mtc to create a new website for the historic seaside town. The Traders hope to attract new visitors to the town as well as provide a useful new portal for information for locals.

Cometobroughty.co.uk has been in existence for several years and was in need of a revamp to reflect Broughty Ferry’s thriving calendar of events, community activities and ever popular shops, bars, restaurants and trades. The website has been in production for the last 6 months with a small but committed project team of BFTA volunteers and will go live in early February 2015.

Steve James, Chair of BFTA said:

"It’s incredibly important that the Traders Association continues to invest in our community. In a difficult economic environment it’s essential that we continue to show people that there’s plenty to do and see here and our shiny new website is going to play a big part in promoting the town.

The website features sections showing our history, the work of community groups, showcasing the work of local photographers and, of course, has information on all our members. And there’s over 100 of them!

With so much, diverse information, it was a big job to bring it all together, so we were delighted that mtc offered to help us with a generous sponsorship deal worth £4000. But best of all, the guys at mtc have been great to work with and will continue to help up keep the site up to date for the next few years. "

Mike Callachan, Managing Director of MTC Media said:

"The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association is a fantastic organisation and we were delighted to work with them to deliver a new website which accurately reflects how fantastic a place Broughty Ferry is. We had seen the previous website and knew that there was massive scope for improvement, and having had business relationships with a number of members of the association got into talks about how we could help. It has been a fantastic project to work on, and we are delighted to be giving something back to the local area. We are very proud of the area we come from, and are happy to support the wider business community wherever we can. "

Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association was founded in the early 1900’s “to foster and promote trade and business generally within Broughty Ferry and to maintain and preserve, and where possible, improve and increase the amenities of the area and the wellbeing and prosperity of its inhabitants.”

Broughty Ferry Traders Association review of 2014 and looking forward to 2015

14Jan

It’s fair to say that the Traders had another busy year in 2014.

The AGM saw the long-standing Chair, Sandro Paladini of Eduardo Alessandro Studios, step down to be replaced by Steve James of John James Roofing. Luckily BFTA has managed to retain the experience, wisdom and knowledge Sandro brought to the Association because he graciously accepted the formal role of Secretary.

Steve has been a one man dynamo, recruiting new members including Trades and Services – representing an even more diverse group of Broughty Traders and coaxing the membership to 100 members and beyond. In particular, BFTA was pleased to welcome Visocchi’s, the town’s multi-award winning Italian purveyors of gourmet Italian delights, as the 100th member.

The summer in Broughty Ferry always kicks off with Gala Week. The hard working Gala Committee, Chaired by The Hotel Broughty Ferry’s Gerry Stewart, managed to make this the busiest one to date! Most importantly Gala Week raised more funds for local good causes than ever before.

A highlight of the year was BFTA’s involvement in the prestigious Academy of Urbanism’s Best Neighbourhood Award. Notably, committee member Willie Watt of Nicoll Russell Studios did us proud with a wonderful presentation about the town when the assessors came to visit and Dundee City Council were extremely supportive of the bid. Broughty Ferry was one of just three nominated neighbourhoods in the UK and was the only Scottish nominee in any category. The Traders were represented at the Awards Ceremony in London by Steve James and Jan McTaggart (from Clementine) who collected the Runners Up certificate which is on show at the library.

BFTA continues to represent the interests of business and the community and is actively involved in discussions about developing Dundee’s Waterfront and in the City’s tourism strategy.

The 2014 Xmas Lights Night was another resounding success with a carnival on Brook Street and entertainment provided by local schoolchildren, local band Gleadhraich and Radio Tay. The posters with designs by local school children undoubtedly helped attract a record crowd with officials on the night estimating a turnout of almost 6,000 – almost double the number of the previous year.

The lights shone throughout December, adding sparkle to a special Sunday when Santa appeared at the first Gray Street Grotto while the Land Train toured the Ferry raising funds for local good causes.

So... how do we follow that?

Our new website, packed with information about retail, trades and services with links to community and events information launches early in the year at www.cometobroughty.com. Keep up to date with the Ferry latest news on our Facebook
page, Broughty Ferry and follow us on Twitter @BFtraders. Its where you can find out about Gala Week, the next Xmas Lights Night and all the other things we’re trying to achieve for Scotland’s Best Neighbourhood in 2015!

All Aboard The Christmas Ferry Express!

04Dec

Broughty Ferry Traders Association is spreading the Christmas cheer on Sunday 14 December 12 - 4pm with a special outing for the popular Land Train which will be picking up Festive families from the Gray Street Grotto, next door to Visocchi's. Many Broughty Ferry retailers, cafes and bars will be open for business on the Sunday afternoons in December, giving locals and visitors even more opportunity to make a day of it and buy their Christmas gifts and treats locally.

The Land Train will take its passengers on a jolly journey through the streets of central Broughty Ferry for just ВЈ1, with proceeds being distributed to local charities.

BFTA Chair, Steve James said:
'By mid-December lots of people are already fed up with their Christmas shopping and we know that there are more folk than ever who want to buy their gifts from local, independent retailers. Most of the shops will be open especially for the afternoon and we were delighted when the Land Train people offered to help us turn Sunday the 14th into a family friendly day in the Ferry. Also great that Santa found the time to spend the afternoon with us at his busiest time of year. We reckon he just wants a shot on the train!'

Broughty Ferry Traders Association Presents the Town’s Annual Christmas Lights Night

29Oct

The family friendly occasion marks the start of the Festive season for locals

Broughty Ferry Traders Association is proud to announce the date for the seaside town’s annual Christmas lights switch on event on Thursday 27 November 2014, 6 – 9pm.

The event has become a firm favourite with locals who enjoy coming together for this unique community event, marking the start of the festive season with fairground rides, street entertainment, performances from the Eastern Primary School Choir, Downfield Musical Society and presentation of the prizes for the childrens’ poster competition. Headlining the event this year is local band Gleadhraich who played to the crowds welcoming the Olympic torch to Dundee and who are bound to keep the crowds warm (whatever the weather) with their lively brand of Celtic rock.

BFTA are grateful to the event sponsors Gillies and, of course, to Radio Tay who really help the night go with a swing. The Traders are also grateful to Santa who has promised to be there on the night despite his obviously hectic work schedule at this time of year and to Dundee’s Lord Provost, Councillor Bob Duncan who will help switch on the lights.

BTFA Chair, Steve James said: ‘The Christmas lights switch on is great fun way to bring all of our community together to enjoy a good, old fashioned street party. There’s always such a great atmosphere and the lights give Broughty Ferry a lovely Festive twinkle, literally lighting up the town with the spirit of a Merry Ferry Christmas!’

  • The event kicks off at 6pm with the Eastern Primary School Choir, followed by presentation of prizes for the children’s poster competition and then a performance from the Downfield Musical Society.
  • BFTA presents donations to local charities from funds raised by community events.
  • Lights are switched on at 7pm by Dundee’s Lord Provost, Councillor Bob Duncan with the help of Santa.
  • Entertainment will be provided by Radio Tay and by local Celtic rockers Gleadhraich with the whole event ending at 9pm.

NEW FOR 2014. BFTA is also spreading the Christmas cheer on Sunday 14 December 12 – 4pm with a special outing for the popular Land Train which will be picking up Festive families from Santa’s Grotto, next door to Visocchi’s.

Broughty Ferry’s retailers are being encouraged to open on Sundays in the run up to Christmas to give people
more opportunities to buy their gifts and treats locally.

Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association Welcomes Local Trades and Services as Members

19Sep

BFTA goes from strength to strength attracting new businesses.

Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association has always reflected the vast range of businesses in the town and a recent recruitment drive has seen a big rise in the numbers of local trades and services joining up to enjoy the support of the Association and, more importantly, to support the local community.

The Traders’ Association is probably best known for its shops, cafes and hotels and now it’s pleased to include even more trades than before. The trades and services include plumbers, builders, scaffolders, flooorers, glaziers, oven cleaners, banks, garages, roofers and more. Membership of the Association brings them closer to their fellow traders, sharing information, marketing the town and creating a strong and united voice to safeguard the best interests of the business community in Broughty Ferry.

Steve James, Chair of BFTA said:
"The diversity of the locally based trades and services available to Broughty Ferry folk is definitely one of the reasons that the Ferry is such a popular and thriving town. And we know from our own experience that our customers like to know that they’re using local tradespeople for those essential repairs and services we all need from time to time.

We’re delighted that so many of these businesses have decided to join the Traders’ Association, which is at the heart of the community making Gala Week and the Christmas Lights Concert happen. We’re also looking forward to their involvement ‘behind the scenes’ as we continue to develop marketing initiatives, represent our community beyond the Ferry and donate to good causes.”

Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association was founded in the early 1900’s “to foster and promote trade and business generally within Broughty Ferry and to maintain and preserve, and where possible, improve and increase the amenities of the area and the wellbeing and prosperity of its inhabitants.”

Broughty Ferry Traders Association Welcomes its 100th Member

21Aug

Award winning Visocchi’s joins BFTA as the popular family business celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Broughty Ferry Traders Association has grown substantially over the last year, almost doubling in size from 57 to 100. The Association has had a successful year with increased attendance at its Gala Week, increased revenue from its activities and now a prestigious new member in the form of Visocchi's, the seaside town’s legendary, award winning cafe and gelateria which has become famous over the years for its award winning ice cream, authentic Italian cuisine and a warm welcome from all the Neapolitan Caira family.

The milestone coincides with two significant anniversaries as Visocchi’s celebrates 60 years in business and BFTA Chair Steve James’s business, John James Roofing, marks its 30th year.

Steve James, Chair of BFTA said:

"As we approached the 100 mark with the membership, I thought it was only fitting that we approached Visocchi’s because it must be one of the Ferry’s best known businesses. We were all delighted when Marco said yes and we look forward to many years of working with him to promote Broughty Ferry as a great place to work, shop, play and, of course, enjoy delicious artisan ice cream!”

Marco Caira of Visocchi’s added:

“We’re really proud to be such a major attraction in Broughty Ferry and we and see membership of the Traders Association as another great way to play a part in our community.”

Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association was founded in the early 1900’s “to foster and promote trade and business generally within Broughty Ferry and to maintain and preserve, and where possible, improve and increase the amenities of the area and the wellbeing and prosperity of its inhabitants.”

Broughty Ferry up for Prestigious ‘Best Neighbourhood’ Award

13Aug

Dundee’s Seaside Town wins out over 65 UK towns to impress The Academy of Urbanism

Broughty Ferry has been nominated as one of three finalists for the Academy of Urbanism Great Neighbourhood Award for 2015. Broughty Ferry, the only Scottish finalist, was shortlisted following an open nominations exercise and made the final three despite strong competition from 65 neighbourhoods in the UK. The other two finalists in the same category are Devonport, Plymouth and Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds.

Three Academy judges, Richard Guise, John Lord and Francis Newton, visited Broughty Ferry on 12 August. The visit began with a presentation from local representatives including members of Broughty Ferry Traders Association, the Community Council, Broughty in Bloom, local Councillors, Community Police and officials from Dundee City Council. The presentation and discussion was followed by a walkabout, despite the inclement weather, which included a visit to the recently refurbished railway station and Grove Academy followed by lunch featuring local produce at Bruach. Next on the agenda was a ride to the Barnhill Rock Garden on the Local Motion Land Train. The day ended in traditional seaside town style at multi award winning Visocchi’s Cafe where the judges enjoyed ice cream sundaes.

Willie Watt, a partner in Broughty Ferry architect's Nicoll Russell Studios and Broughty Ferry Traders Association committee member said:

"The news that Broughty Ferry had been nominated for the Academy of Urbanism's Best Neighbourhood Award was a wonderful surprise. The fact that the Ferry is now a finalist alongside Devonport and a neighbourhood in Leeds, having fought off stiff competition from over 65 entrants is even better news. This underlines to a much wider audience that the Ferry is a wonderful place. Of course those of us who work, rest and play here already know that. That dynamic is exactly what appealed to the Academy, but Broughty Ferry's attractions, its unique sense of place, community pride, shopping and leisure offers, environment and broad housing mix can at times all be taken for granted or come as a surprise to many from further afield. It is therefore heartening that such a prominent international body has underlined just how special the town is and the degree to which other town and neighbourhoods can learn from the Ferry. Whatever happens in the judges' deliberations all three communities are winners and I sincerely hope that Broughty Ferry can attract even more visitors and more business as a result of this important accolade."

Richard Guise, Academician said:

‘There’s no doubt that all three of the finalists are winners. We would like to thank the people of Broughty Ferry for making us so welcome and for showing us why this small town is so successful.’

The winners will be announced at The Urbanism Awards Ceremony in London on 14 November.

Notes to editors:
The ‘Best Neighbourhood’ Award is assessed on the following criteria:
1. Leadership and Governance
2. Local character
3. Amenity
4. Commercial Success and Viability
5. Environmental Sustainability
6. Community, Health and wellbeing
7. Connectivity

Broughty Ferry Gala Committee Announces the 2014 Programme of Events

03Jun

Broughty Ferry’s Gala Day on Sunday 29 June signals the start of the seaside town’s long established and ever popular Gala Week, which runs until Sunday 6 July.

The day sees people from far and wide descend on Castle Green to enjoy some good old fashioned family fun including the children’s fancy dress competition, pipe band parade, live music, Radio Tay Roadshow, traditional fete games, fresh food from local suppliers, fire engine, face painting, charity stalls, fairground attractions and, for the grown ups, the beer tent.

Entry to the fete is free but a bucket collection and fundraising activities raise money which is donated to local charities such as The Lifeboat, Age Concern, St. Andrews Ambulance, YMCA and the Scouts. Any surplus will go towards the purchase of additional Xmas street light displays.

Gerry Stewart, Chair of The Broughty Ferry Community Gala Committee said:

"A fantastic amount of thought and work has gone into organising this years events, so we are confident that this year’s gala week will be one of the best ever.

We want to see plenty people coming to the Ferry, Grannies, Grandads, Mums, Dads, Uncles, Aunties, kids of all ages, and of course anyone else!

Of course, The Gala Committee works extremely hard to make Gala Week happen but we couldn’t do it without the generous support of Dundee City Council and the event sponsors."

The week continues with the now legendary window spotting competition where members of
The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association display an article in their windows which they do not sell. This year there are 71 traders involved. There are several events every day of the week including the Sand Sculpture Competition, Pavement Drawing Competition, Antiques Roadshow, Quiz Nights, Family Fun Night, Fishing Competition, Bonnie Baby Competition and many more.
